Donna’s training will help bring social change to young people in Liverpool
A training programme involving an award-winning theatre company is helping to bring about social change in excluded communities here in Liverpool and across the rest of the UK.
Donna Coleman, who is working towards a BTEC qualification in IT on a course provided by Progress to Excellence, is a vital cog in the wheels of 20 Stories High, a charity whose free creative activities are developing young people’s skills, employability and confidence.
The Toxteth-based company brings together emerging artists and world-class professionals with individuals and groups from communities who are often under-represented in theatre. And with her own new skills, 35-year-old Donna will be on hand to support the pastoral needs of the young people in the theatre company’s participation programmes.
Donna brings to Toxteth-based 20 Stories High a background of acting and behind-the-scenes work with vulnerable young people.
She said: “Art and the theatre is a way of giving young people a voice to give them confidence and the ability to make something of their lives.
“A lot of the people who come here face lots of challenges in life – they may not have done very well at school and have little in the way of qualifications but the opportunities they get at 20 Stories High are amazing. They can get new skills by finding their own voices through music, writing, dance, creative art as well as being part of a supportive environment that’s working to bring about social change in the deprived areas they come from.
“My role here will provide important administrative support for 20 Stories High, from helping with budgets to rehearsal planning. It’s an exciting step in our aim to bring new audiences into theatre venues and to take theatre out into communities locally, regionally and nationally.”
Cath Goodwin, director of business development and commercial operations at Progress to Excellence Ltd, added: “Training comes in many and diverse forms and here, working with 20 Stories High, we are helping to develop Donna in her supportive role within this ground-breaking organisation.
“Young people, no matter what their background, previous education or circumstances or, all deserve a chance to encounter new experiences to stimulate and encourage them towards their life goals.”
