Katie’s 15-year beauty training dream becomes reality
Never giving up on her dream has put mother of two Katie Bowyer on the beauty training journey of a lifetime.
As a teenager of 17, Katie had always yearned for a career as a beauty therapist but her hopes were dashed when health problems meant she was unable to finish her course.
Fifteen years later, she is now living the dream – with her qualifications, skills and knowledge giving her the confidence to run her own mobile beauty business.
Katie, who achieved her qualifications with the Progress to Excellence trading as Indulgence Beauty Training Academy in Frome, Somerset, said: “I’d always wanted a career in beauty but, when I left school, couldn’t complete my course as I had to go into hospital.
“Later on, I tried to take up where I left off but couldn’t find a course that was right – they were always being held too far away from home for me.
“By that time, I had a family which made it even harder to get what I wanted.”
However, someone known to Katie told her about the academy based at The Business Courtyard in Trudoxhill – and the rest is history.
Everything was perfect – Katie loved the course, the location of the training facilities and the fact that she could fit everything in with family commitments which, with two young children, was vital.
The result of Katie’s endeavours has enabled her to run a mobile nail service and prospects are good for the expansion of her business as her client base grows.
She added: “This is now my future, the dream I had when I was 17. What is amazing too is that I can fit work in with school hours.
“I’ve been so happy to have had great support from the training academy and the doors that have been opened to me to set me on the road to my career in the beauty business.”
So happy, in fact, that now Katie has completed her NVQ Level 3 in Nail Service is continuing her studies to gain a Level 3 qualification in Beauty Therapy.
The Progress to Excellence trading as Indulgence Beauty Training Academy in Frome specialises in NVQs, Diplomas and VRQs in hairdressing, beauty, nails and make-up. Most courses are funded through an Advanced Learner Loan which (subject to eligibility) is available to individuals aged 19 and over, who choose to study a Level 3 to Level 6 course. It’s easy to apply for ad Advanced Learner Loan, and household income isn’t taken into account. There’s also no credit check or upper age limit.
The loan will not be paid back until income is over £21,000 a year. Once this threshold has been reached, the learner then only pays back 9p in every £1 of what’s earned above it.
