New lifestyle beckons after Sam’s major leap to learn beauty skills
A major leap from a former job in the education sector has given beauty therapist Sam York the chance of a new and exciting lifestyle.
As an “older” learner, Sam is embracing the challenges she took on when she embarked on her training as a nail technician at the Progress to Excellence trading as Indulgence Beauty Training Academy in Frome, Somerset.
Forty-four-year-old Sam said: “I was 42 and had been working as a teaching assistant for 15 years. That was fine as I had two young children and the hours fit in perfectly with them.
“But I wasn’t going in the right direction for what I really wanted to do. That’s when I started to re-train for a new career – and haven’t looked back.”
Sam, who holds a VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technology and Level 3 in Nail Services, is now planning her next steps to gain more beauty skills so she can enhance her current salon work.
Reflecting on her road to these new skills, she said: “While I was thinking a couple of years ago about what I was going to do with my life, a friend asked if I would act as a model for her while she was being assessed for her nail technology qualification.
“I just loved watching the skill involved in this work and decided this was just the thing for me.
“The learning process at the training academy was great and an added bonus was its location, in a beautiful environment in the countryside and yet only five minutes away from Frome town centre. It was perfect.
“I have to admit, I did panic at first as it’s no easy thing to start re-training for something completely new at the age of 42. But it wasn’t like being in a classroom at all as the training and working environment was so supportive.
“Now I’m really happy – doing something just for me. What could be better than doing a job you enjoy so much and one that makes your customers feel great too?”
The Progress to Excellence trading as Indulgence Beauty Training Academy in Frome specialises in NVQs, Diplomas and VRQs in hairdressing, beauty, nails and make-up. Most courses are funded through an Advanced Learner Loan which, subject to eligibility, is available to individuals aged 19 and over who choose to study a Level 3 to Level 6 course. It’s easy to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan and household income isn’t taken into account. There’s also no credit check or upper age limit.
The loan will not be paid back until income is over £21,000 a year. Once this threshold has been reached, the learner then only pays back 9p in every £1 of what’s earned above it.
